Here you will find a list of some of the most haunted and spooky houses in the world. Click on the photo to read the story of the ghosts that reign and rule these most haunted of all houses, with the odd boat thrown in for good measure!!!
Raynham Hall
The Brown Lady of Raynham Hall has been seen many times over the past 100 years or so. She is so named the "Brown Lady" due to the brown brocade style dress that the ghost has often been seen wearing while wandering the halls and staircase of now (ghoslty) world famous Raynham Hall.
In 1849 Major Loftus and his friend, named, Hawkins saw the ghost one night after retiring to bed. When they saw the ghostly figure they were amazed by the old fashioned clothing that she wore and by the soft glow she created. The following night the Major was lucky (or unlucky depending on how you feel about ghosts) enough to see the figure once again, this time he took note of her deep empty eye-sockets. The incident resulted in several members of staff resigning and a full investigation being carried on Raynham Hall involving many of the local detectives.
The Myrtles Plantation
The Myrtles Plantation (located In St. Francisville, Louisiana) was built in 1796 by General David Bradford. It claims to be the most haunted house in America with the number of ghosts estimated at around 14. The Inn (or B&B) was built on a site known for it's previous slavery connections, murders and it was also proposed that an ancient Indian burial ground was located nearby by too.
There have been ten known murders in the house, plus at least one suicide. The most frequent ghostly visitor is named as Chloe. Chloe was a local slave who was hung for murdering two young girls. The story is told that General Bradford's son-in-law (Clarke) decided to cut off the black woman's ear for eaves dropping into conversations. Her revenge was too mix poison into the 2 children's birthday cake which resulting in a painful death. The two children's ghosts have been reported to have been seen many times playing on the porch of the building. Many other ghosts include lowly shadowy type figures, most likely to have been part of the slave trade, have been seen in this area of the building, possibly still reporting for their duties.
Chloe herself was was soon found out and quickly hung on site for her crime. Chloe is now regularly seen roaming the house wearing her slave garments and a turban which was used to cover her missing ear...
Whaley House
Thomas Whaley was a prominent San Diego resident (wealthy and influential), serving as President for the San Diego City Board of Trustees, essentially the Mayor position, in 1858. He lived in the first brick home to be built in San Diego (located on the junction of San Diego Avenue / Harney Street). It served as the local county courthouse from 1869 until 1870. Other parts of the house were used as a commercial theatre as well as a meeting room for the County Board.
Why did the house become haunted? It is said that a few years after the house was finished, Whaley had disturbed an older wooden structure that was there, previously used for executions (Gallows) and from that day on heavy boot footsteps were heard around the house. It was known that "Yankee Jim" was hung on the gallows on September 18, 1852 but when the executioners released the noose to commence the hanging Jims toes touched the ground due to a mis-measurement and his death was prolonged and agonizing.
Since the footsteps and occasional sitings of "Yankee Jim" Mr Whaley himself has been reported to have been heard and seen soon after his death along with his Wife, Anna and there 17 month old son, who died of scarlet fever. The son has been reported to have been heard crying many times over. As if this was not bad enough, in the late 1800's one of the neigbours daughters fell and badly cut here neck while playing in the garden. She too was thought to have passed away while being treated in the building.
The Whaley House fell into disrepair in later years but Its demolition was prevented around 1956, by the formation of the Historical Shrine Foundation of San Diego County, which bought the land and the building in it's entirity. Soon after San Diego county was convinced to preserve the building as a both a historical monument and to be formally recognised as a U.S. Commerce Department haunted house. Please feel free to visit next time you are in town.....
The Queen Mary
The Queen Mary has been a permanent feature in Long Beach, California for a couple for decades and is one of the most famous cruise ships of all time. The ship has become a hotel, museum and popular tourist attraction, and the historic ship is internationally recognized and attracts thousands of visitors every year. Besides the living guests, the ship is said to play host to several ghosts. It has been speculated that the Queen Mary might be one of the most haunted places in the world. Reports say that as many as 150 known spirits have taken up residence and lurk in various locations all around the ship.
The Queen Mary sailed her maiden voyage on May 27, 1936. Built in Scotland to be used as part of a two-ship express service from Southampton to Cherbourg to New York, the Queen Mary is 1,000 feet long, and in her day was said to be bigger, faster and more powerful than the Titanic. She also held the record for the fastest-ever North Atlantic crossing. The historic ocean liner's passengers included the most celebrated people of the time, including royalty, top entertainment figures and important world leaders.
At the start of World War II in 1939, luxury travel stopped and the ship was turned into a carrier ship that was used by allied forces to carry troops from March of 1940 to September of 1946. It was during this time that she would become known as "The Grey Ghost". By the end of World War II, the ship had carried more than 700,000 troops, traveled over 500,000 miles and played a significant role in almost every major Allied campaign. She also survived a collision at sea, set the record for carrying the most people ever on a floating vessel (16,683), and participated in the D-Day invasion.
When the war ended, the Queen Mary was refurbished and started up her elegant cruises again in July, 1947, with weekly service between Southampton, Cherbourg, and New York. By the early 1960's, the popularity of transatlantic cruises greatly decreased due to the increasing affordability of air travel. The ship attempted to revive its popularity, but without central air conditioning, outdoor pools, or other amenities offered on most other cruise ships, the attempt was unsuccessful.
In 1967, the Queen Mary was pulled from service and was sold to the city of Long Beach, California, to be used as a maritime museum and hotel. On December 9, 1967, she made her final voyage to Long Beach.
During her 60-year history, the Queen Mary was the site of 49 reported deaths, opening the doorway for potential spirits to haunt her. Reported hauntings include a young crewman in the engine room, swimmers in the first-class pool, a man in black, and a woman in blue. Some of the Queen Mary's most haunted places include the propeller box, engine room, boiler room, cargo hold and first class swimming pool.
One of these hauntings is thought to be the spirit of John Pedder, a fireman in his late teens who was crushed to death by a watertight door in 1966 during a routine drill. Unexplained knocking has been heard around the door, and a tour guide reported she saw a figure dressed in dark clothing as she was leaving the area where the young man had been killed. She saw his face and recognized him from his photographs. He was dressed in blue coveralls and sporting a beard. The young man has often been seen walking along Shaft Alley before disappearing by door number 13. This famous door was used in the filming of the Posiedon Adventure and has reportedly crushed at least two men during the ship's history.
The first-class swimming pool seems to be a hot spot for ghostly encounters. Wet footprints mysteriously appear even though there's not a drop of water in the pool. These footsteps lead from the deck of the pool to the changing rooms. Women in vintage bathing suits are occasionally seen stopping by for a swim ,even though the pool has been closed for more than 30 years. There have also been reports of seeing the spirit of a young girl carrying her teddy bear along with disembodied voices, laughter and splashing sounds.
In the second class pool area the spirit of another little girl named Jackie is often been seen and heard. The girl drowned in the pool during the ship's sailing days and doesn't seem to want to move on. Her voice and the sound of laughter has been captured in this area.
In the room that was used as the third class playroom, there have been reports of the sound of children crying in the nursery room. There is also a report that a single baby's cry has been heard. This crying is thought to be that of an infant boy who died there shortly after he was born.
In some of the first-class staterooms there have been reports of a tall, dark haired man wearing a 1930's style suit showing up in various places. In addition to sightings of the man, the faucets and lights get turned on in the middle of the night, and phones ring in the early morning hours but no one is ever on the other end of the line.
There are several other reports of sightings about the ship including a beautiful young woman in an elegant white evening gown who dances alone in a shadowy corner of the salon, which was once used as the ship's first-class lounge. Another mysterious woman in white has been seen close to the front desk. She will usually disappear behind a pillar.
Other phenomena that has been reported throughout the ship include the sounds of knocking, doors slamming and high pitched squeals, drastic temperature changes, and the recurring smells of another time.
The Queen Mary has been investigated by a number of paranormal professionals, printed publications, television shows like Ghost Hunters and Most Haunted, and several others. In addition to portions of the movie "The Poseidon Adventure" being filmed there, the X-Files filmed a 1998 WWII era episode about a time warp in the Bermuda Triangle aboard the ship. That was a great episode - it was called "Triangle" - you should check it out if you missed it!
On the Ghost Hunters episode, what was thought to be a fantastic paranormal event caught on tape turned out to be not so fantastic as it appeared someone had tampered with the video camera. So is the Queen Mary really haunted or not? The Ghost Hunters are heading back out there in February of 2008 to see if they can find out. Hopefully there won't be any tampering this time and they can capture some evidence to support all the claims of paranormal activity on the Queen Mary.

The White House
The White House is the official residence and workplace of the President of the United States. It is located at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW in Washington D.C. and it was built between 1792 and 1800 in the a Georgian style period.
The White House has been thought to have been haunted for many years. President Roosevelt, Herbert Hoover and Harry Truman have all reported to have heard unexplained rappings during the night on their bedroom doors. Many have thought in th past that this could have been Abraham Lincoln, including Calvin Coolidge's wife who reported seeing the ghost of Lincoln standing in his now familar posture with his hands clasped behind his back. One Lincoln's biographers, Carl Sandburg, said he did not see the ghost but "strongly felt his presence" when he stood at this same window when he visited White House.
Eleanor Roosevelt was occasionally spoke of a presense when she worked in the Lincoln bedroom, and one of her maids claimed to have seen the ghost sitting on a bed, pulling off his shoes. Another well known siting was when Queen Wilhelmina (from Holland) was staying as a guest at the White House. Awakened by a knock on the bedroom door, she opened it, and saw Lincoln's ghost staring at her from down the hallway. She promplty fainted, awaking later to find the ghost had disappered.
Perhaps one of the more famous stories was when Winston Churchill spent a night during World War II. Churchil walked naked into an adjoing room where Lincoln was stood by the fireplace. Churchill remarked wittingly: "Good evening, Mr. President. You seem to have me at a disadvantage." apparently Lincoln was said to have smiled, soon to vanish.
The most recent siting was made by Maureen Reagan (Ronald Reagan's daughter) and her husband who both claimed to have seen the ghost many times. The ghost was described as a "transparent figure". Reagan's dog was alos reported to have stood outside the bedroom barking, refusing to enter on many occasions.
The Tower of London
During her long and illustrious 900 years, The Tower of London has developed into one of the most haunted places in Britain. She has been home to beheadings and murders, torture and hangings, as well as being a prison to Queens and Nobles alike.
Thomas A. Becket is "the first reported sighting of a ghost at the Tower of London."
During the construction on the Inner Curtain Wall in the 13th century, Thomas appeared apparently unhappy about the construction, and it is said he reduced the wall to rubble with a strike of his cross. Henry III’s grandfather was responsible for the death of Thomas Becket, so Henry III wasted no time building a chapel in the Tower of London, naming it for the archbishop.
This must have pleased Thomas’ ghost because there were no further interruptions during the construction of the wall.
The Bloody Tower was the scene of the infamous disappearance of the two princes; Edward V (12) and Richard Duke of York (10), who are thought to have been murdered in 1483 on the probable command of the Duke of Gloucestershire, who was to be crowned Richard the III.
According to one story, guards in the late 15th century, who were passing the Bloody Tower, spotted the shadows of two small figures gliding down the stairs still wearing the white night shirts they had on the night they disappeared.
They stood silently, hand in hand, before fading back into the stones of the Bloody Tower.
These figures were identified as the ghosts of the two princes. In 1674 workmen found a chest that contained the skeletons of two young children, they were thought to be the remains of the princess, and were given a royal burial not long afterwards.
The story of the little princes is still to this day a heartbreaking story. They are "among the most poignant ghosts" in the Tower of London.
The most persistent ghost in The Tower of London is the ghost of Queen Anne Boleyn.
The King, Henry VIII, after learning the baby she carried for nine months was a boy and still born, accused by her of infidelity.
She was taken to TOWER GREEN and was beheaded on May 19, 1536.
Queen Anne appears near the Queen’s House, close to the site where her execution was carried out. She can be seen leading a ghostly procession of Lords and Ladies down the aisle of the Chapel Royal of St. Peter ad Vincula.
She floats down the aisle to her final resting place. Queen Anne is buried under the Chapel’s altar. Her headless body has also been seen walking the corridors of the Tower.
Sir Walter Raleigh lived quite comfortable compared to others who were imprisoned within the walls of the Bloody Tower.
His "rooms" are still furnished as they were in the 16th century, and can be seen when visiting the Tower today.
He was executed by James I, and has been seen looking exactly as he does in his portrait hanging in the Bloody Tower.
I hope you have enjoyed Pt1 to The Ghosts of The Tower of London. In Pt2 we discover what happend to Catherine Howard and Lady Jane Grey as well as the Horrific end to the Countess of Salisbury.
